ICCL stands for gender equality as a human rights issue. The advancement of equality benefits all members of society. We work to ensure that gender is not a disadvantage for anyone in reaching their full potential.
In 2021 the Citizens’ Assembly published a set of 45 recommendations to advance gender equality. We were asked by the new Joint Committee on Gender Equality for our take on the recommendations and the best way to ensure their implementation.
We made some recommendations on Constitutional reform, which would require a referendum. These included amending Article 40 which guarantees equality so that it explicitly recognises gender equality and non-discrimination. We also recommended that Article 41 should be amended to protect all families, not just marital families. And we recommend that Article 41.2, which places women in the home, should be amended to get rid of archaic gendered language and instead recognise and remunerate the work of carers of all genders.
