The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) and the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) have produced a conference report of the Racial Profiling in Law Enforcement roundtable discussion.
The discussion, hosted by ICCL and CAJ as part of the Policing for Peace project, took place in the
Guildhall, Derry on Wednesday 7 June 2023. The first half of the event focused on racial profiling and immigration enforcement, while the second half focused on racial profiling and law enforcement generally.
While there were distinct issues identified for each jurisdiction, common themes also emerged across
both, including a lack of official ethnic monitoring data on the use of particular police powers (i.e., stop and search), how racial profiling intersects with policing and immigration functions on a cross-border basis (and how Brexit has exacerbated pre-existing issues), and how racial profiling by law enforcement damages trust between the police and community.
The report will be launched at the ICCL-CAJ ‘Police Reform in a Changing Ireland Next Steps after the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland‘ conference in Maynooth University on Thursday 16 May 2024.
This seminar and report are part of ICCL and CAJ’s joint ‘Policing for Peace’ project, which is supported by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. The seminar was supported by the Community Foundation Ireland and Community Foundation Northern Ireland programme.
