28 January
To mark International Data Protection Day on 28 January, ICCL will take part in two online webinars – on Facial Recognition Technology and Tracking Free Ads – which you are invited to attend.
At 1pm, ICCL’s Olga Cronin will moderate a discussion on the growing use of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in public spaces. During 2019 and 2020, ICCL campaigned against the use of FRT in the New Children’s Hospital. Our campaign is outlined in a new report which focuses on the multiple ways in which the growing use of FRT infringes on all of our rights. The six speakers will include Tamás Malnár of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, and Nathan Wessler of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

At 3:30pm, ICCL’s Dr Johnny Ryan will speak at the launch of the European Parliament’s Tracking Free Ads Coalition. The webinar will investigate whether Europe can switch off online surveillance to protect privacy and better support journalism. The founding MEPs of the coalition are Wölken, Geese, Breyer, Kolaja, Schirdewan, Agius Saliba, Sippel, Regner, Leitao-Marques, Kaili, Melchior, Ertug and Tang.
