What is Real Time Bidding?

It’s the biggest illegal data breach ever recorded, for a start.

The private things you do and watch online are collected from a vast system that operates behind the scenes on virtually every website and app.

This allows “data broker” companies to collate your data – including your sexuality, your medical conditions, your location – to form highly sensitive personal profiles about you.

The data breach occurs in online advertising’s Real-Time Bidding (RTB) system, hundreds of billions of times daily. This is the biggest data breach the world has ever seen.

AND, it’s illegal.

This data crisis can be easily stopped, if Google and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), who control the system, are held to account. Two years ago, Dr Johnny Ryan made a formal complaint to Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner about this huge data breach. But, two years later, nothing has changed.

Two years later, we sent a reminder to the DPC that their failure to end the RTB data breach exposes our private information to thousands of companies daily.

We also wrote to the Department of Justice about Ireland’s duty to ensure the DPC is properly resourced to its job.
