15 April 2025 — ICCL, in partnership with the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ), will host its 2nd annual policing conference “Policing of Far-Right Intimidation in the Republic of Ireland” on Monday 19 May in the Richmond Event Centre, Dublin.
As the impact of far-right protests on the island of Ireland continues to increase in both number and intensity, urgent questions arise regarding how incidents of far-right intimidation should be policed in accordance with human rights principles, while also safeguarding the rights of affected communities.
Speakers include:
- Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, former Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights and Robina Chair in Law, Public Policy, and Society, University of Minnesota Law School
- Andrea Peto, Professor and Fellow, Central European University Democracy Institute
- Andy George, President, National Black Police Association (NBPA)
- Dessie Donnelly, Director, Rabble Cooperative
The conference will discuss and reflect on the Gardaí response to far-right intimidation in the Republic of Ireland since 2020, including operational policing considerations, challenges and concerns for An Garda Síochána.
Panel discussions will explore the impact of current policing approaches on the communities negatively affected by far-right activity, in addition to best practices and lessons learned by other jurisdictions — with a particular focus on the experiences of policing sectarianism in Northern Ireland.
ICCL will also reflect on how far-right intimidation policing fits into the broader police reform agenda in the Republic, and the advancement of a human-rights based approach to policing and the recommendations from the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland (CoFPI).
