ICCL submission to the Judicial Planning Working Group

November 2021

The right to an independent and impartial judiciary is a fundamental part of the right to a fair trial.

The independence of our judiciary is generally well protected but international standards require a broader focus on the way justice is delivered to ensure independence and impartiality are protected and seen to be protected.

In our submission to the Judicial Planning Working Group, ICCL has called for a significant increase in the number of judges across the justice system to ensure fair trials and justice for victims. The current delays in the justice system impact the accused, victims and all justice actors, and must be addressed by a range of measures; chiefly by increasing the numbers of judges, along with fair recruitment processes and judicial training in line with international standards.
