Press Release, for immediate release

12 October 2015

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) extends its deepest condolences to the family of Garda Tony Golden and his colleagues in An Garda Síochána following the tragic events in Omeath yesterday evening.

Speaking early this morning, the Council stated that, “the shooting is a stark reminder that, every day, members of An Garda Síochána put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve communities across Ireland. The courage displayed by Garda Golden differs only in that his actions were met by such a vicious response”.

“Our traditions of unarmed policing underpins the trust and esteem in which Gardaí are held and we must not allow it to be undermined by the isolated actions of a man of violence”, the rights watchdog concluded.
